  About the SpinTech

New SpinTechs are no longer available.  For those lucky people who have them, they will be supported by the maker: either by Robert Koffsky or Gord Lendrum.  If you are unsure of the person who made yours, check the plate where the on/off switch is.

The SpinTech was designed to meet the needs of the production, hobby and/or handicapped spinner who desires a compact precision spinner with a variable speed up to 5,000 RPM.  The basic design is flyer drive with Scotch tension.

The SpinTech features a unique bobbin system which allows easy and rapid change without the need to remove the flyer and/or drive band.

The tabletop unit is robustly designed and constructed entirely of aluminum, stainless steel and engineering polymers, with high-technology miniature ball bearings throughout to insure a long, maintenance-free life.  The SpinTech has been designed and fabricated to eliminate the maintenance and adjustments required in most spinning wheels.  The bearings are sealed and require no lubrication.

In months of spinning trials with a series of SpinTech prototypes, we have seen no perceptible wear of the bearings, drive belt or tension band.  The overall design has been extremely conservative, specifying components normally used for very strenuous service.  We are confident that this philosophy will result in a wheel of great longevity.

The 8-ounce-capacity corrosion-free bobbins allow cotton and other fibers to be set and dyed directly after spinning.  The polymers for the bobbin ends has been carefully selected to provide appropriate frictional characteristics when coupled with the high tensile strength woven polyester tension band.  Again, long life and ease of use were the guiding parameters.

The motor uses less than 150 watts of power, allowing operation where 110 volts AC is available or through an inverter using 12 volts DC as the power source.  The electrically reversible motor has been made to our specifications with ball bearings and long-life brushes.

The reversible motor provides "Z" or "S" flyer direction at the flick of a switch.  The power switch is an industrially rated hesitation design which prevents changing direction while the motor is running.  One must pause at the "OFF" position when reversing direction thereby preventing untoward motor electrical problems.

The SpinTech weighs 13 pounds, complete with four bobbins, foot-speed control with governor for speed control, and integral Lazy Kate in its airline-style fitted case.  The spinner is ready to use upon removal from the case, with only hookup to power and connection of the foot-speed control required.  $950.

A word about the makers of SpinTech:

Robert Koffsky of Miller Hill Limited designed and built the SpinTech.  Gord Lendrum produced them for about 5 years.  They are no longer being made.
